08/17/2010 - NEW High Fly Showcase Teams
High Fly is proud to present its "Showcase Teams" to the Birmingham area.
Showcase teams are not all star cheerleading teams, but not metro cheerleading teams either. They are a hybrid team that begins to bridge the skill sets between the two, preparing an athlete for upcoming middle or junior high school tryouts or all star tryouts.
The goals for the High Fly Showcase teams are:
*Assist the local metro cheerleading squads with additional skills and routines for their athletes
*Provide an economical option to get involved with a cheerleading program that pushes all athletic and spirit fundamentals of cheerleading
*Promote the advancement of local athletes into cheerleading with a stronger skill set of athletic and spirit leading skills
The New High Fly showcase teams will provide an opportunity to learn athletic based routines including a team cheer, motions, jumps, tumbling and stunting. These routines will be performed at an end of season showcase as well as other opportunities such as at half times of the local metro football/basketball games.
The showcase teams will provide an opportunity for those who are not yet ready to get involved with the time or financial commitment of all star cheerleading, but want to continue building skills for both game day activities and competition cheerleading.
The High Fly showcase teams will have a season that lasts for four months. At the end of the month, a team showcase will be held, much like a recital, giving the athletes an opportunity to show off the skills that they have learned. The showcase teams will train inside a Sidelines Sports Academy/High Fly All Stars facility to improve the opportunity of safely learning tumbling, stunts, motions, jumps, dance and more.
All coaches of these teams will be trained and certified to ensure your athletes safety and proper technical education. The teams will practice one time each week for 1.5 hours. The practice times vary per team, but will either be at 4:00 or 5:30, Monday, Tuesday or Thursday.
The cost to participate on a High Fly Showcase team is $350.00 for the entire season. This includes tuition, routine choroegraphy, routine music, High Fly uniform and tshirt. The first practice of the season begins on September 6. You can register online on our website, www.sidelinessportsacademy.com or www.highflycheer.com or come in person and register during August 23-26. Come be a part of the first High Fly Showcase teams and help us support our local youth athletes in the advancement of their athletic and spirit leading skills. We hope to see you soon!
07/23/2010 - Message from Varsity Brands About Recent Competition Cheerleading Lawsuit
We recently shared some news with you related to Jeff Webb’s testimony in a trial involving the cheerleading team at Quinnipiac University. As you know, Varsity has always supported all types of cheerleading, and Jeff felt it was important to speak up in this landmark case to ensure clear differences between traditional school cheerleading squads and new, collegiate “competition-only” teams so that both can exist and prosper.
The judge decided the competition-only cheerleading team at Quinnipiac did not meet Title IX requirements. Varsity does believe there is a way to evolve aspects of cheerleading into an officially recognized intercollegiate sport, and thinks the cheerleading community will get there soon.
In fact, USA Cheer, the national governing body for cheerleading, has been making great strides in developing a new format they believe will not only allow it to be recognized as an intercollegiate sport, but will also help differentiate it from traditional cheerleading. For example, their new format would involve a new name and a clear difference from the current 2.5 minute competition structure, to help make the necessary distinctions between traditional school cheerleading squads and new competition-only teams.
We believe it’s beneficial for athletes, schools and everyone to continue offering traditional cheerleading as well as introducing an emerging sport that further evolves current aspects of competition-only cheer. We look forward to working with you and the rest of the cheerleading community to further define and support an emerging sport that provides even more opportunities for young athletes.
We thank you for your continued support, and should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at snoone@varsityspirit.com.
Sincerely,
Sheila Noone
Vice President, Varsity Brands
